Autobiography In Five Short Chapters

Today I received an email from a colleague that I just absolutely loved, so I had to share.  It is about change, and the steps one has to take in order to make change.  As a Coach I spend my days talking about change – change in behaviors, change in beliefs, change in direction, and change in reactions.  More often than not I learn that people’s ideas and expectations of change are unrealistic, and people set themselves up for failure time and time again.

Autobiography In Five Short Chapters

This Autobiography was written by Portia Nelson many years ago, the profound simplicity of it still rings true.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Chapter 1

I walk, down the street
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost…..I am hopeless.
It’s not my fault
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter 2

I walk down the same street
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I pretend I don’t see it
I fall in again
I can’t believe I am in the same place
But it isn’t my fault
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter 3

I walk down the same street
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I still fall in……it’s a habit
My eyes are open
I know where I am
It is my fault
I get out quickly

Chapter 4

I walk down the same street
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I walk around it.

Chapter 5

I walk down another street.
